The Styrofoam packing peanuts are not a compost (reminds me of the year I
put shredded newspaper down as a mulch .. talk about a flyaway mess!). You
lay them down in the bottom of the container as an aid to drainage only.
They do not decompose, and they are very lightweight, which makes them ideal
as a drainage aid.
I was just mentioning NOT using the new cornstarch based peanuts that
disintegrate when water is added. No value in a glob of cornstarch on the
bottom of your container!
