Artichokes, One More Time!

A couple of weeks ago, we discussed artichokes, ad nauseum (I started it).
This morning I read an article in the food section of the New York Times
about how the chokes are grown in central Calif. The article said that
seed-grown artichokes are different from the ones we find at grocery stores
in spring. Those are vegetatively propagated, and the stock is closely
guarded within families. Variety names aren't even available. The article
also stated that seed-grown chokes don't have the thorn or spike on the
end of petals, and they have a much milder taste. Actually, the article
stated
that the taste was washed out in comparison to the cutting-propagated
commercial chokes. What has been the experience of SQ Footers who have
grown chokes from seed? Are these two differences (as stated in the NYT
article) true?
