Some report good success with tooth picks in the soil which cats don't like to step on. Straw mulch, landscape fabric, or even plastic would seal off the litter from the litter terrors...

A hi-tech solution would be one of those motion-sensor sprinklers; another answer is drip irrigation, which keeps the soil moist when cats would prefer it dry.

Good luck with the cat-scat prevention!

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Hello Ya'll
I built a 4 by 4 foot cedar box patio garden for my driveway.  I was wondering, since I live in downtown Portland, I have a problem with cats in my flowerbeds at night.  They seem to love Barkdust to "DooDoo" there thing, if you know what I mean.  Forecasting the future, when I fill my garden with dirt, I do believe that although I call this box a garden, the cats are going to think that its a luxurious kitty litter box.  Kinda in the same lines as dogs and the leash laws, there is a law for trespassing cats.  You are able to catch them and take them to the pound, but I really don't want a trap line that resembles something from an Alaskan survival story.  Plus I don't think my neighbors would think of me as a good neighbor.  I'm not going to catch cats for the pound when the cats are only doing something that comes natural to them.  Alls I want to do is keep them out of my yard and garden.  Does anyone else have this type of problem and if so, what do I do to keep them out of both my barkdust and my future garden?  Sorry for the subject.
Thanks in advance,
Rob Curtis
