I don't know about charcoal, but I use the ashes from the fire place. Be
careful of two things. One is that the wood you use is real wood, not an
artificial log that you can get in the stores. The artificial logs have
chemicals in them that would be bad for the garden. Also make sure that the
fire is completely out before you take the ashes and put them in the gardens.
I caught my gardens on fire one time by not waiting long enough for the
fire in the fireplace to go out. Could have burned the house down as I had
the ashes sitting in a bag on the back porch all morning.
