According to current encyclopedias, wheat kernals were found in Iraq in
1948 dating from about 6,700 BC. Biblical accounts written between 1446
and 986 BC also mention wheat (or spelt) and rye. All of these accounts
indcate it was used by humans in Asia since ancient times. Spelt, a
primitive form of wheat, is still grown in some areas. We grew spelt crops
on the farm as recently as the 1940s. As to viability, the oldest known
viable seeds, according to Dr. Nabham in his book "Enduring Seeds" were
lotus seeds found in Manchuria. These seeds were intially dated at 1,040
years old. Later some geochronologists estimated 100 years. The most
recent estimate is 440 - 460 years for these viable lotus seeds based on a
"refined" carbon dating method. .Not exactly a sqft topic although I
occasionally grow a 4 X 8 patch of durum wheat . -Olin
