Patio Tomatos?

I am new to Square foot gardening.  I am using the patio garden technique this year as I may be moving.  In his book Mel show tomatos in a patio garden but I have my doubts about this due to tomatos being a deep root crop (or so I thought).  Has anyone out there had any luck with tomatoes in a patio garden?  Six inches of soil sounds like a recipe for failure and my tomatos mean a great deal to me.
 
Any help would be appreciated.
