Leaves turning brown/black

Has anyone ever had their plants' leaves turn dark brown/black? I helped
plant someone's raised beds 2 weeks(they used potting soil and compost
from WalMart, peat moss & vermiculite) and now the peppers, tomatoes,
pansies and Shasta daisies are all getting dark brown and black leaves.
The peas and green beans, as well as the assorted herbs seem to be okay.

Any ideas on what's happening here?
