Finally..its' done!!! For those of you who hadn't heard ..we just bought a 
house (30yrs old), there had, in the dim and distant past, been a garden in 
the back..how could we tell?    Someone..may they never eat a good veggie 
again, had used crushed rock as a mulch over the entire area (we're talking 
25 x 25).  We found this under a 2" layer of soil/grass, when a friend loaned 
us their roto-tiller to prep for raised beds....CLUNKCLANK!! 
 <insert wailing grinding of teeth and various cuss words>
  
  After much puzzling, and grumbling we finally decided  (not having money 
for an excavator to dig it out) wo just cover the area with weed mat and 
build the raised beds on top..covering the paths in bark mulch.  
    
For a U shaped bed with 2 sides @16' x 3' with  the connecting side@ 16' x 
4', and another 4' x 9' bed in the middle of the U (visualize 3' paths 
between them) we ended up using 100 bags of Top Soil, 50 bags of Composted 
Peat Hummus and 30 bags of Mulch...each of them wieghing in at @40lbs!!!!!!!  
  

   We used 2x10 boards that I screwed together using 2x2 stakes in the corners
 for added strength..leaving the stakes 2' high(they came that way)  next 
year when we have more $$ we are going to raise the beds another 10" in ht.  
We just finished doing it Saturday(5/26) .....
.........  now on my next day off (Tuesday) I can go get the PLANTS!!!!  

Plants....hmmm.... 24 tomatoes, 12 bell peppers, 2 zuchinni, 6 cukes, 2 seed 
potatoes, assorted pole beans, carrots, onion sets, garlic, beets, (I'll have 
to wait for fall's cooler temps for lettuce/peas/brussel sprouts?)...
.....any other ideas...I still have 6 - 8 squares  thats not counting the 36 
marigolds and 10 petunias I have  flowers or veggies (NOT OKRA!!!)
