Jean- The Sunset Western Garden Book--I think it is put out by the same folks that did Sunset magazine or somehow related- anyhow it has been a staple for a million years. The one I had before was from the 60's I had gotten it a thrift store I think- very good - this has lots of pics and new plants- but the old one is still really good. This was just a treat. For Western States. But I think everyone uses it.
In my humble opinion- your first year---- grow some tomatoes , cucumbers, peppers, pole beans,   squash  and  maybe some eggplant and a few herbs this year- try a couple varieties of each- especially tomatoes and cukes and squash and then that will give you a feel for what square foot is all about. Then plant some fall crops and see how that works. The above veggies are very easy to grow with your eyes closed. - Buy the plants -except for the beans- depending on your zone- they grow fast from seed- and just go for it-plant some flowers around or in your square to help with pollination unless there are already flowers around .- Welcome and I hope you have fun-!!!!!!!!! kitty

Hello all,

My name is Jean, and I am new to the list, and to square foot gardening. I have always been a big fan, but my thumb is a bit black, so I am hoping to change all that. I live in sunny and hot Dallas, Texas -- zone 8a.

I am planting my first sq. foot crops tomorrow. I'm so excited! Currently, I have several tomato plants (about 5 each per planter) planted in 32 quart planters. The tomato plants are now about 18" tall.

Questions for you green thumbs:
-at what point should I add those trellis-like round wire things to the pots to support the toms?
-do the tomatoes adhere to that thing by themselves, or do I need to do something special?
-and for trellis planting in general... I want to add a trellis to my existing bed. Can you recommend some crops that are pretty easy for someone like me to start with?
-Kitty: which new book were you referring to in your purple tomatillo post? And... happy birthday!! :-)

I hope that I am not asking too many questions. I haven't finished the Sq. Ft. Gardening book yet. I also downloaded some shareware for planning gardens. It is called gardening3.exe. Any opinions?

Thanks so much for being here! I am waiting in delighted anticipation for your response.

Jean
