Re: First Ripe Tomato of Season

Doreen,

I didn't know you lived in Texas! I live in West Texas (Odessa) and it
gets really hot, windy and dry here. This is our first year to garden
and we liked the looks of the SQFT method so are giving it a go. Our
spinach is almost ready to harvest, all of our lettuce either died or got
eaten before it got an inch tall and we got tired of replanting, our
onions and potatoes are going wild as are our peppers, sugar snap peas,
tomatoes, and squash. We had a little trouble at first with the okra,
but it's sprouting now. Our carrots, bush beans, swiss chard and herbs
are also starting to grow. We do a daily check for new babies and every
one is exciting. I'm a little nervous about losing everything due to
some unforeseen creature or weather (we've already had some unexpected
freezes and hail), but keep a close eye on things. We had some initial
problems with flea beetles (that's what liked our lettuce so much) and
seem to finally be rid of them after sacrificing our lettuce.
