Al,
I planted Tuxedo the past year but am trying Platinum Lady, Tuxedo, and
Dawn this year. I just moved into a "new" house (actually, it is an old
farmhouse) and have a lot more space to plant this year. I also planted
4'x4' squares with 25 plants evenly spaced. One patch of Tuxedo did OK,
but it was in poor soil (newly dug bed, mostly clay, very little organic
matter or nutrients.) My second patch did very well in a reestablished bed
and most stalks produced two ears with a few bearing three.
Based upon the nutrient needs of the corn and the poor output of the rest
of the crops from the newly dug bed, I would say that the peas and their
nitrogen fixing ability helped out greatly.
