Hi Cheryl,
I, too, am fairly new to square foot gardening.  Last year we put up one
4x4' bed to try it out and see how we liked it.  It was so easy to manage
and we harvested so many vegetables that I can't believe we didn't try
the square foot method sooner.  It's still too cold here in eastern NY to
plant most of our vegetables but I did plant some lettuce last week.
Nothing has poked through the earth yet.  Good luck with your garden.   I
think you'll enjoy it.
