Al, you can buy bags of various materials at your nearest HD but why not
start you own compost bin or pile and take advantage of the plant material
you aren't going to eat as well as leaves, etc.
Even with my raised beds with soaker hoses, I still added compost to the bed
at the end of the season and more at the start of the followig season. I
would think that you would want to till the soil as you will be leaving root
mass from the plants that you do grow. I did get one of those small tillers
(Mantis) that is easy to handle in small spaces but digs like a champion.
