I'm talking about marsupial possums, a native Australian animal (much beloved by our NZ members :-). They are most definitely herbivores. I've seen them kill entire trees by nibbling off fresh growth until the tree literally suffocated. After having three sets of true leaves nibbled off, my bean seedlings likewise gave up the ghost. After talking to a few people, I've going to make some proper cloches, with 2x1 frames, covered with chicken-wire (hexagonal mesh), that will sit on top of my raised bed frames. An added avantage of this is that I can drape shade cloth over the top to protect new transplants from the sun.
