I've found that basils are extremely easy to grow directly from seed (and so much cheaper than buying transplants) that you can grow a dozen different varieties without any trouble--as long as you wait for the season to warm up enough, that is. :) So far my favorite is Cinnamon Basil--just brushing by this plant is heaven in itself! Incredible! Try basil from seed (check your seed catalogs or local nursery), you won't be sorry!
