A lot depends on your humidity. Here in Florida they don't work very
well at all. With or without a fan (but your air has to move over the
wick first). Same principle as an evaporative cooler. The air looses
heat to the water as it evaporates it. So you have to have a low enough
humidity to evaporate water.
Around here we put our wash on the line on a sunny morning then take it
in at noon to put it in the dryer.
