I use 12" for several reasons. It brings the bed up higher, it keeps me
completely out of the subsoil (we have nematodes and I don't know what
the previous owner put in the soil), it is deep enough for root crops,
it gives me room to dig out a square for my patented Cubic Foot
Composting, it gives me cubic feet measurements for amendments, and
three 2X4s make a 12" border pretty well (I know it's 10 1/2 but they
are dug out a little), it's tall enough to keep out a lot of insects and
weed seeds and it also seems to keep cats from using them. I have an
