We are now past our last spring frost here. Just got my order of seeds
and plants in from Pinetree yesterday, so I've been busy planting
strawberries, raspberry canes, rhubarb, and asparagus (they sent me 11
asparagus roots/crowns instead of 10). Of course, I didn't quite have
my bed ready for all of the above, so I was scrambling to do that as
well. Plus it's been raining. I got the strawberries in yesterday and
while everything looked a bit dry and sad, they are already perking
up. I got the rhubarb and asparagus done earlier today.
We're still digging beds. I got a 18" by 7ft almost finished today for
vertical crops. I've struck gold in finding good soil. While we do
have a couple of inches of really nice soil and matt from the forest
floor, underneath is rather sandy/clayey. However, when the power
company came and cut a road through the property about 10 years ago,
they piled all the trees and earth they graded to one side. We've been
clearing out some of the dead wood, and underneath is some beautiful
compost. Of course, most of my beds are done already, but I'll have it
to add when I replant squares.
Hopefully everything will go well. I have my tomatoes in the ground,
as well as 1 zucchini. The peas are starting to just take off - I got
them in a bit late. In any case, I'm really enjoying myself.
