JC, I'm not sure what you mean by this. Double digging is'nt about swapping
top for bottom soil. It's about loosening your soil so that your plants roots
can penetrate easily. To double dig a bed you start at one end, dig down about
12" in a 1' strip across the end of the bed and put this soil in your
wheelbarrow. Now stick a fork into the bottom of the hole and wiggle it to
loosen that soil (if you want to you can add some organics to this bottom
soil). Now move to the adjacent 1' strip of your bed, dig this strip down
about 12" again putting this soil into the first 1' strip and mix in
amemendments at the same time. Continue down the bed in this manner. When you
reach the other end of the bed you'll use the soil in your wheelbarrow to fill
this in. It's a lot of work but the result in wonderfully fluffy, loose soil
that your plants will love :-) If you don't step on your soil and compact it
again you should not have to double dig the same bed again.
