Yes, mulch on top of the soil will rot and not rob soil of nitrogen.
B U T ...... sawdust is such small particles that it perhaps too easily
finds its way into the soil....... also highly acidic, and that is why it is
a good mulch around acid loving fruits and plants.
I don't know how long it takes for sawdust to decompose....harder woods
would take longer....... but if you have access to lots of it , get a load
and begin composting it so you can use it later. Or just pile it up for a
year or and when you start using it rotate in another fresh batch so you
always have one to use and one decomposing.
I read that pine straw would be an okay mulch around radishes....... but do
not remember the source.
