Mel first published his book in 1981, although i believe his TV show played
in America in the late '70s. As for similar methods that predate his, all i
can say is that he did not develop his technique in a vacuum. In the
introduction to his book, he says he looked around for gardening methods
before deciding to invent one himself. Surely he was inspired by some of
the methods he saw. On the other hand, it is quite possible for more than
one person to come up with such a brilliantly simple method. Mel concludes
his introduction with "...you'll wonder why someone didn't think of this
before." Perhaps Dr. Gesals did, but was not as successful at marketing his
invention. C'est la vie.
