I'll try not to open that can of worms. Just a word of advice for Mark based
only on personal experience. Your description of this weed sounded suspiciously
like bermuda grass. We had a terrible invasion of bermuda in our veg garden
last spring. First we tried Roundup. Then we tried Roundup again. Then we tried
Roundup again. Every two weeks. Three times. It would sorta kill the green part
(turned brown) on top, but never ever killed the roots. We finally ended up
digging it out and pulling it up by hand. I really doubt that vinegar would be
more effective at killing this weed than Roundup. We were careful to follow
directions, careful to spray when winds were calm, and there was no drift. Our
tomatoes were within 2 feet and did not suffer at all. I am still healthy.
Perhaps since the tomatoes weren't affected, and neither were the weeds, this
batch of Roundup might not have worked on anything at all! My two cents is,
don't use Roundup on bermuda grass. It works on most everything else, but it is
expensive in my book. We worked hard to pull out most weeds, including puncture
vine and stinging nettle, by hand, and now we have very few weeds that we can't
keep control on. Bermuda grass is a pain to pull out by hand. Maybe there is a
"nicer" weed killer out there that will kill bermuda but not really kill good
grass or plants.

Good luck,
