Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Does anyone know how long beans stay viable? I planted beans 2 weeks
ago, and have had very poor germination. I've made sure to keep the bed
moist, it been mid 50s at night and between 65-80 during the day. I
used bean innoculant powder and presoaked the seeds for 3 hours, planted
1 inch deep in vermiculite like "the book" suggests." Any ideas as to
what my problem is?
The seeds have been stored correctly - some varieties are new 1999, some
from 1997, and some 1993. I didn't realize until just now that the 1993
seeds were so old, otherwise I probably wouldn't have planted them.
The 1993 variety is black bush beans for dried beans. I had 9 squares
planted and not one seed germinated. I put 3 seeds in each hole, just
to be sure. Even my 1999 seeds have poorly germinated (around 20%).
Most of the time my problem with starting seeds outside is having a
difficult time keeping the seed bed moist. Do beans not like it so
moist, like carrots and lettuce etc.? Maybe I'm misting too often? I
mist 2-3 times a day when it's hot and sunny out because the seed bed
surface dries out so quickly.
thanks for your help. sorry for the long post.
P.S. I've spent the last 2 days taking out a honeysuckle bush. I
suggest to anyone to make sure you really want the honeysuckly in that
spot before you plant it, because they are in real pain in the *** to
take out. This bush was only 2 years old too.
