Hi Brian,
Most of the ordinary hydrangeas I know of usually reach at least six feet
in height and are at least four to six feet around. They're really shrubs,
and not very suited to square-footing. I mean, yes, you could built a box
and sift the soil, etc., but it's not like you'd be replanting every year.
There are also climbing varieties and some Japanese dwarf kinds, the
latter of which you could try. I know I see such hydrangeas in pots in
stores, but I don't know how long they really last. Depending on where you
are, a pot might be a better option, since you can move it in and out with
the seasons.
