Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Hi Bonnie,
I generally do not plant tomatoes in anything less than 16" deep; but, it
probably depends on the variety planted. The 1/2 whiskey/wine barrels are
great for indeterminate varieties, Whopper, Big Girl, Sweet 100's, etc.
These are underplanted with lettuce, radish, chives, chervil, chinese greens
or onions (green) in early spring. The determinate varieties (paste-type) go
in the flower border. I haven't tried these in containers, maybe someone
has? and can advise on container size.
Hope this helps.
