Where to get cheap wood.

One thought I have had but not done anything with yet,
is pallets. Some places throw them away and others
discard the broken ones. I have seen large piles (size
of a couple of semi trailers) with big signs saying free,
here in lincoln nebraska. They are bulky but the main
3 boards are fairly heavy and 4 feet long and with a little
bit of elbow grease you should be able to fasten them
togther into something larger. Just think of them as
wooden legos. You may spend a little bit on glue
nail or screws but if the wood is free your costs are
low. It might even be possible to peg them together.
The frames of my old raised beds are timbers that
have been pegged together with 3/4 inch rebar.
I drill holes through all the timbers then use a couple
pound masonary hammer to nail the boards together
with the 18 inch long pieces of rebar. After it goes
through the timber the excess goes into the ground
and keeps the bed from moving (nebraska clay
is very slick and when the beds were first made
they had a tendency to creep a few inches in the
rain. Once they are establish they quit moving)

My old beds are treated landscape timbers. I am
no longer comfortable with using that material,
there are supposed to be okay once they have
"aged" awhile but I don't plan on using anymore
of them.
