it might be too late to really get a substantial garden going; it probably will depend heavily on your light levels right now and throughout the season. in OR, we have a mild, rainy winter (that's just barely too cold to grow things, but we can overwinter them beautifully!) but we suffer even more from extremely low light levels both due to the earth's orbit and to the heavy cloud cover. for us, we have to get our garden full-sized by mid-october in order to have veggies to harvest throughout the winter. they hold well (and should hold even better in your even-milder climate! if you're serious about your 50°F lows, even tomatoes would survive!!) but don't begin to grow again until feb or so. the cole crops will be easy for you, as will the root crops. start with those and you have nothing to lose by covering your solanaceae with plastic (to keep the rain and colder temps off) to overwinter them. they'll pick up where they left off if you can keep them alive! very lucky, you are! thyme >Hello All, > >After moderate success adapting my north-American gardening patterns to >my new digs (excuse the pun) on the Mediterranean, I would like to >explore the possibilities for the winter vegetable garden.
