Re black plastic, the first thought that came to my mind was that Mel is an
engineer, some (many?) of the others are uninformed ideologues, who have
decided that since they thunk it, it is so.

Caveat Emptor applies as much to gardening books, unfortunately, as to
vegetable prep devices.

Clear film allows the UV "light" to penetrate and warm darker objects just
as window glass. secure a piece of clear plastic and a piece of black
plastic near to each other on the ground for a few days and see which one
warms the GROUND.
