Re: Last Tomatoes


The key to figuring out whether a late-ripening tomato will ever turn red 
consists in turning the fruit upside down and checking the end opposite the 
stem.  If you see a whitish five-pointed star radiating out from the 
center, that individual fruit has passed the point of no return.  It WILL 
ripen indoors off the vine.

No whitish star shape?  That fruit will NOT ripen later.

Depending on your first-frost timing, now might be a good time to harvest 
all remaining greenies.  Set the ones with stars aside indoors out of 
direct sunlight and not touching one another and wait.  Fry up the 
all-greenies in a pan for a side dish with supper.
