I suggest you check out _Lazy Bed Gardening:The Quick and Dirty Guide_ by John Jeavons and Carol Cox. It addresses many of the issues you mentioned and details many of the necessary actions to produce most or all of your own food in your home garden. From the blurb on the back of the book:
" . . . Take advantage of two decades of Bioinetensive food-raising experience from people everywhere as you create a highly productive, resource conserving mini-farm at home, with it's own thriving ecosystem - an environmental solution for the nineties. . . and beyond".

Good luck, Tom
