Despite being awed by others' bountiful harvests and extensive efforts, I
am proud of my garden. Before I describe my results you should know
that my garden is a strange sort of raised rectangle (6 x 16 x 12 x 14)
which receives full sun only 50% of the day due to tall trees. Since
I have used SQFT techniques ever since I read Mel's book years ago, I
regard my garden as a true SQFT. The trees drive me crazy with shade
which varies every year as they grow. Two years ago, two fell over and
were removed giving much more sun.
Thus my choice of crops is determined by prior results.
COS, BUTTERCHRUNCH Lettuce --- This vegetable grows well consistently.
This year it turned bitter quickly but yielded several salads. The
potential pests this year were the rabbits held at bay with wire fencing
Radishes --- all leaf and no bulb. Shouldn't have tried this since prior
experience bad, but I had the space and seed <g>
Sunflowers --- didn't even come out of the ground. Never tried them
before.
ITALIAN Parsley --- One plant from one transplant. Very tasty but some
scale on the leaves.
ROMA Tomato --- abundant delicious fruit from three plants. Very
consistent from year to year but taste this year more bland than usual.
Will try different variety of plum tomato in future.
ORANGE PIXIE HYBRID Tomato --- Best in garden this year. Several dozen
fragrant sweet mid-size fruits from two plants. Slight leaf
discoloration (?) which didn't impede plants.
KENTUCKY WONDER Green Pole Beans --- Had to replant since first seeding
didn't sprout. Crop late but good production.
SALAD BUSH Cucumber --- Several fruits smallish this year from only one
vine. Production halted by powdery mildew (Must spray to prevent next
year).
CONNECTICUT FIELD Pumpkin --- 6 medium sized fruits from one plant.
Increase in size halted when plant succumbed to mildew (Must spray) Gave
away to kids in neighborhood.
Sweet Bell Peppers --- only a few, thin-walled fruits. Since this is the
second year in a row with poor production, won't try again.

Please suggest other varieties that thrive in semi-shade, or other
appropriate techniques
TIA
Bill --- Yardley, PA (zone 6/7)
