Amy, I live in Southeast Alabama, formerly from Northwest Ohio, and I have used the Square Foot method of gardening both places. It works wonderfully. I would suggest that you find a copy of the Mel Bartholemew's book "Square Foot Gardening" to use as a reference manual. It covers everything, even making your own soil. I like the method of placing the board on top of the ground and mixing up Mel's receipe for soil. I tried digging up my square, placing the boards in the ground, and augmenting the soil I took out of the space. TOO MUCH WORK! Gardening is supposed to be fun! Geesh!!!! Oh yes, I have a copy of Mel's book if you want to ask any questions or if a bookstore can't locate the book for you.
