Not a stupid question. We have been gardening two years now, and our
soil is also really really rocky, big and small. We also started with
rototilling, and got rid of a lot of rocks, but we still have a lot of
small ones, and even though we don't have huge freezing frosts here in
the southland, we still get large boulders working their way up twice
a year, so getting rid of the rocks is a constant problem. We just do it.
Our carrots were from outer space the first year, but after getting
rid of a lot of rocks and supplementing with additional soil, compost,
etc., they look better now. Beets were never a problem - always round
and delicious. Parsnips did ok, they are delicious steamed or deepfried.
We couldn't afford to build and fill raised beds, so we just grin(d) and
bare it. :) The soil drains well, we get very few weeds wherever we don't
water. Sorry I couldn't be more help, but hopefully I've encouraged you
enough that you won't give up! (Our only problem now is to figure out how
to get rid of all the rockpiles! We already have enough decorative boulders
around our landscape!)
Good luck,
Shawn
