Todd,

I too live in North Alabama and no the window isn't closed.  True we haven't
had a frost yet but according to the weather last night (Saturday, 18 Oct)
we should get one next Wed (22 Oct).

Its best to wait until cold weather sets in or at least until the ground
gets cold.  You can did the hole now and begin to amend the soil with
fertilizer or compost.

Want you want is for the tree to stay dormant.  Thats why the ground needs
to be sold.

You can transplant anything that is dormant all the way through about the
end of Feb.
