Well, your questions are a little wide for a brief answer, but should
provide a fertile bed for discussion.
First of all, if the entire availiable space is 9x50, meaning that you
could not make paths on the outside of that area, then I suppose you
could use two rows of 3' beds. So you would have a path on both outsides
and one down the middle. If the area is only 9' wide because of walls
you would have to do it differently since one foot is not wide enough if
it's up against a wall. Perhaps two paths, two feet from the walls with
three feet between them. If you can access the area from outside the 9'
then you only need one path down the middle.
More to my liking but not as efficient would be dozens of odd sized
beds with a meandering, branching path around them. Two foot wide beds
do not need a path on the other side of them so you could do a lot of
them around your larger beds with a path between. Grow your low crops in
them and save the climbers for trellises behind things in the larger
beds.
What do you plan to use for paths?
Comments on particular use of species would depend on some of the other
variables, does the whole strip get full sun? Is there a wall? A fence?
Do you have access to both ends? How built up is the soil? Do you have
sandier areas or is it homogenous?
