Er, no... that's not it...
Actually, I just keep a deep cover of dry grass clippings where ever I can
and then weed the rest regularly. Right now, I only have a few squares
covered in mulch, because of the major change in my layout. I used to keep
everything but freshly planted squares about 3" deep with mulch and compost.
But it is true that anything I let go for a little while, or any compost
that gets spilled on the side, immediately sprouts a wide variety of grass
and weeds, and not a few tomatoes, melons and other produce scrap
volunteers. But then, I don't have any manure, and do a relatively cold
compost.
