Re: square foot gardening

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Hi SHirley,

I'm really curious about the 3' x 3' size beds - if they're big enough, and
how you arrange them.

We are having a parent work day at our school Nov. 7, 9-12, to get things
ready for winter, to outline a wetland area with crossties, and improve
drainage. Have a bunch of volunteers lined up, so it should be light work
for all. One thing I am hoping will get done is building 4 boxes in a 4' x
6' dimension (I think), to grow cotton, soybeans, peanuts, and sorghum in
spring. Trying to get the 4th grade involved through crops of Alabama and
Alabama history. Can we grow those things? I saw the cotton at the
Botanical Garden and it sure looked good.

I think you mentioned about growing broomcorn last summer? Can you make
brooms out of it? Is it like "corn" corn?

One more question - will you use manure (not the by the bag kind from HG) in
your compost at school? I've never used it at home. From what I read, it
would really improve the output, but I worry about aromas and pinworms, and
parent complaints. Any suggestions?

Vasha
