Re: Asparagus?

We put in 4 professionally built raised beds in January 1997 and inserted a
row of asparagus crowns (all-male 3-year-olds, according to the nursery)
that May. Because a properly fed asparagus bed will bear for a century (!),
we sited ours at the back of a bed, running along the edge, where it could
safely be left undisturbed from year to year.

We followed the nursery's printed instruction sheet about digging trench,
filling it halfway (only) with compost including lots of cured manure,
placing the crowns, and lightly covering them with soil (but not filling up
the trench; that happens over time). The crowns were put into the bed on
about 8-inch centers in a single line.

Of the 10 plants, 7 survive today and 1999 was the first year we cut any spears.

These allegedly all-male plants have LOTS of seeds on them....

The flavor is good but not spectacular.

The spears tend to be thicker than I prefer, right out of the ground (i.e.,
they're not slim even when short).

The plants have not attracted any pests.

The ferny foliage is good looking.

Overall, I'm not knocked out by this experiment.
