Re: Corn pollination

Square Foot Gardening List - http://myweb.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

I've experimented with different corn spacing: the first year 1 sq ft per
ear, for 16 in a 4 x 4 area; the next year at 6 inch spacing
(significantly multiplying the yield); and now at 9 inch spacing. I
found that the yield from the1 per foot spacing to be too small, with
some issues as to pollination; the 6 inch spacing was too close and yield
also suffered (although Mel Bartholomew recommended 6" spacing in Organic
Gardening a few years ago, albeit for an early variety, Early Sunglow);
the 9" spacing seems to work fairly well with most stalks producing one
solid ear. I grew Silver Queen two years ago at this spacing and it
worked OK.
