Many years ago I thought this was the way it was supposed to be done, and I grew many gardens this way - in So. Calif. Everything from corn to zukes. C - Z 8 ) I've since even planted artichokes, though they were in small 2 " containers. I must not have had many snails then, because that's the reason I even start the corn in cellpacks. The snails just mow every new seedling down. I've just this week "seeded" with decollate snails so maybe in a few years I can direct sow again.
