Wow, so glad they don’t come around here. Ruler (our dobe) is not tolerant of snakes and would probably wind up in really deep trouble if we had rattlers round here. The hog nose just slither out of his way but I don’t know if a rattler in a bad mood would be so understanding. When we lived at the Lake, we had them everywhere. For every snake we saw (and we saw them weekly) 2 were rattlers and 1 was a hog nose or bull snake. Really prefer the odds out here. Almost 20 years on the property and no rattlers, that is a record I want to keep working on.

I have had a couple of intense training sessions identifying this particular visitor. We had 3 in the first 21 years here and then 3 in the last two years. There was a large grasslands fire not far from here last year and I think that was the reason for 2 last year. I also had one in the first couple of months in our first house in CA. That one was in the garage.

Message----- Harold, Good eyes, I couldn't make out any buttons, and still can't. Oh well!! That diamond shaped head can also be found on a hog nose. Not identical but close, especially when you step on one in the garden <G>.

Having had visitors like that here, I learned to check the tail. When the tail end is round and has buttons, Rattlesnake. Diamond shaped head is another very good clue it's a rattlesnake. Last picture clearly showed buttons and end of tail.
I was interested in what kind of tool was being used to lift the snake?

Message----- Merle, That's a real cutie. Can't tell from the picture, what kind of slithery friend is that? We have encouraged both hog nose and bull snakes to hang around out here and knock on wood have never had anything poisoinous.

Migration time at Roberts Backyard. Don't worry we relocate each snake at two different places.
