No.  It wouldn't work.  I've ruined enough spading forks over time 
even with the aid of a pick.  Describing what's there as 'soil' would 
be a stretch.  'Subsoil' maybe.  Hopefully it will be some sort of 
growing medium closely approximating soil when I'm done.
