Diploid means having two sets of chromosomes to the cell.  
Tetraploid has double that or 4 sets of chromosomes to the cell.  
Simply layman terms, but that is how my head works!  Sorry.  Basic 
understanding for me is that the tetraploid variety of plant is much 
larger, bigger blooms, hopefully stronger and more resistant, 
although that isn't always true.  The tetraploid iris is large 
enough that a common bubblebee can no longer pollinate it.  The 
bloom is to large for the bee to transfer pollen in it's normal 
functions.  Hence, most tetraploid iris do not self pollinate! 
Now the pros will probably laugh at this explanation!  But it is all
