I had several stalks that did this in 2006.  We had wide temperature swings.  I believed it to be the result of alternate growth patterns.  Outer layers of tissue seem to mature before the plant stops internal growth.  Something has to give.  
 
Many plants also had horizontal breaks.  At least two of these broken stalks were able to mature pods.
