There is a free software program that keeps your photo the original size but will make a thumbnail any size you ask it to be.
Take a look at EZThumbnails http://www.fookes.com/ezthumbs/
I use it a lot and it is quick. Not only that if you want your whole file thumbnailed it will do that too.
