I see that kind of damage all the time. Here is a picture of my culprit. I think it is a Coddling Moth larvae. They make a pin hole in the pod and then start eating. I usually only see large holes like your picture on the bottom side of the pod. My pic also shows the granular detrius- likely droppings that are usually associated. Christian
