Pearl, my own first reaction was also AMETHYST FLAME.  I loved its 
color and texture.  A current variety that is clearly of this same 
heritage is SWINGTOWN.  As I age I have trouble sometimes pulling up 
names from memory ("sticky file drawer" I sometimes explain), and 
tend to think of Swingtown as my "Amethyst Flame" in the "now."  It 
has much of the same character, but in modern dress and form.

Neil Mogensen, z6b/7a near Asheville, NC where danfordiae, 
reticulatas and crocus are beginning to show, but not yet in bloom.
