Winter Foliage Differences and Borer Resistance??

Here is a picture of a few 'Rosalie Figge' X aphylla
seedlings showing their relatively leafless winter
status here in Maryland. And for contrast, a picture
of Iris pallida X cengialtii seedlings with persistant
(and winter damaged) foliage. I was just thinking that
maybe this could account for the reported borer
resistance of aphylla and borer susceptibilty of
pallida. If the eggs are attached to old foliage in
the fall; shed the foliage -- shed the eggs. Just a
wintertime thought.
