It is lands where all the fighting is going on at the moment.  Lands betwen the Euphrates and Tigris rivers, down to Sumar, where writing was first used.  In other words, Iraq.
Many fairly modern explorers collected plant material there - Freya Stark, Percy Sykes & his sister Ella are 3 that I can think of without going digging around in books.
