TB: Atys

This is Atys (Anfosso, '88).  Have had it for four years, in a less than optimal location, but it has done fine.  This past spring, I noticed this funny little horn-like growth projecting out of the fall itself, not the beard.  Does anyone know if something specific causes this, or is it just a mutation?  None of the other blooms, or falls of this bloom, had these 'horns'.
